Our household is always up for a good burger night. There are so many ways we enjoy them, you can find a lot of those recipes here. Today I'm sharing how I make a fairly decadent burger that's topped with a fried egg and caramelized onions. It takes a little skill to get it all just right and the efforts are so rewarding.

The part of this burger that takes the longest is making the caramelized onions. This is always a bit of an exercise in patience because you want the onions to be sweet and cooked through, without getting burned. If they're undercooked they don't taste good either, the onion is too pungent and raw. The whole process varies slightly depending on the amount of heat you use and the freshness of the onions, so take your time. The caramelized onions can be made in advanced and reheated when you're ready to use them!

The rest of the recipe is fairly straightforward. Cook the burgers and the prepare the eggs fresh at the end so they are still hot and the yolk is runny. Then, assemble the burger and serve it right away! I always have homemade french fries on the side along with a good salad.

This is a great recipe for summer grilling. Whip these up tonight and enjoy a fun meal with your family!

This is the best, most decadent burger for days when you’re in the mood for a big filling meal. My whole family loves when I break this recipe out for burger night.Â

For the caramelized onions:Â
1 large yellow onion, thinly slicedÂ
1 tbsp butterÂ
1 tsp olive oilÂ

For the fried eggs:Â
2 large eggsÂ
1 tsp butter or oilÂ
Salt and pepperÂ
Optional toppings & condiments:Â
Lettuce or arugulaÂ
Tomato slicesÂ
Spicy mayo, aioli, or mustardÂ
InstructionsÂ
1. Caramelize the onions:Â
Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.Â
Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.Â
Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until soft, golden, and sweet—about 20–25 minutes.Â
Optional: add brown sugar or a splash of balsamic vinegar during the last 5 minutes for deeper flavor.Â
2. Cook the burgers:Â
Season patties with salt and pepper.Â
Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat.Â
Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side for medium-rare, longer if desired.Â
Add cheese slices during the last minute to melt.Â
3. Fry the eggs:Â

Crack the eggs and cook sunny-side up (or over-easy if you prefer slightly set yolks).Â
Season with salt and pepper.Â
