We are deep in Homemade Hot Chocolate season in Connecticut. I know that may sound silly to say, but I love this sweet treat in the winter. I look forward to making it every year and so do my children. I think it's one of those wonderful drinks that is equally comforting and decadent.

Over the years I've tried many hot chocolate mixes, but I really like making it from scratch the most. Many people look at me sideways when I say that, but it is actually much easier than you think. I make it on my stovetop and don't take my eyes off it because you want the milk to heat through, but not scald. As it heats I add all the ingredients and stir it well so everything melts together and thickens slightly.

To serve my Homemade Hot Chocolate, I top it off with a lot of whipped cream and marshmallows. It's just so delicious this way. The creamy topping and marshmallows melted into the chocolate drink and makes it even more decadent. As you'd expect, my children love it to be served with a tower of toppings!

This is a great way to end a meal if you don't want to serve an overly sweet dessert. Or, to warm up after a very active day outside. I hope you have a lot of fun with it in your home!

Homemade Hot Chocolate

There’s nothing better than homemade hot chocolate in the winter. I like to serve it with a whole board of toppings for the kids to choose from.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk (whole milk for best results; any milk works)

  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 30 g (1 oz) dark chocolate, chopped (optional but recommended)

  • Pinch of salt

  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract

For Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream

  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Make the whipped cream by beating the cream and powdered sugar until well combined and it becomes light and fluffy; you’ll have about 2 cups when it’s complete. Set aside.

  2. In a small saucepan, whisk cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.

  3. Gradually whisk in milk to avoid lumps.

  4. Place over medium heat and cook, whisking frequently, until hot but not boiling

  5. Stir in chopped chocolate (if using) until it’s melted and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

  6. Pour into mugs and top with homemade whipped cream and any toppings you’d like!
